Yayoi Kusama: Dots Obsession

  • How is it made? What is the composition like? What kinds of decisions has the artist made?

It is basically made out of colors and shapes in general. The composition of this artwork is made out of the forms of bowling pins and eggs, in a cube filled with rainbow colored dots in all 6 walls including ceiling and floor. But the rainbow dots are made up in different sizes, so are the shape forms around the cubic area.

  • How do our opinions and reactions to the work compare? What kinds of personal connections can we make? What is the art communicating?

My opinion on it is that it is not my type of artwork, it is one of those artwork that i will once it a while give it a shot to appreciate the making of it; as for my reaction, it was a ‘wow’ of white space filled with just different sizes and colorful dots as a full artwork, unlike the olden days, portraits and landscapes were known professional artworks. The personal connections that can be made is that it can be related to both of our reaction and opinions as it if both coming our from our minds. The art could be communicating to us by playing mind games from what is on the canvas, onto what we have in mind about the art piece.

  • How does the artist’s history and background affect the way the viewer understands how work is made and the message contained within it?

The artist could draw certain things to indirectly represent their history and background, by using certain things with some background, the artwork will automatically get to the viewer, especially for those that could understand psychology well, an artwork could be read clearly by them.
