Yayoi Kusama: Dots Obsession

001.jpg

  • How is it made? What is the composition like? What kinds of decisions has the artist made?

It is basically made out of colors and shapes in general. The composition of this artwork is made out of the forms of bowling pins and eggs, in a cube filled with rainbow colored dots in all 6 walls including ceiling and floor. But the rainbow dots are made up in different sizes, so are the shape forms around the cubic area.

  • How do our opinions and reactions to the work compare? What kinds of personal connections can we make? What is the art communicating?

My opinion on it is that it is not my type of artwork, it is one of those artwork that i will once it a while give it a shot to appreciate the making of it; as for my reaction, it was a ‘wow’ of white space filled with just different sizes and colorful dots as a full artwork, unlike the olden days, portraits and landscapes were known professional artworks. The personal connections that can be made is that it can be related to both of our reaction and opinions as it if both coming our from our minds. The art could be communicating to us by playing mind games from what is on the canvas, onto what we have in mind about the art piece.

  • How does the artist’s history and background affect the way the viewer understands how work is made and the message contained within it?

The artist could draw certain things to indirectly represent their history and background, by using certain things with some background, the artwork will automatically get to the viewer, especially for those that could understand psychology well, an artwork could be read clearly by them.

History of Camera 📷

The history of the camera has an extensive background since it can be traced back for centuries. During the 5th Century B.C., Mo Ti of China discovers the principal idea of the camera. He noted “that the reflected light rays of an illuminated object passing through a small dark enclosure result in an inverted but exact image of the object”. The types of Cameras that will be covered in this presentation are the Camera Obscuras, Daguerreotypes, Polaroids, film cameras, disposables, and digital cameras.

Installation Art

Installation art is an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that often are site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. An installation usually allows the viewer to enter and move around the configured space and/or interact with some of its elements, it offers the viewer a very different experience from a painting or sculpture which is normally seen from a single reference point.

Here are some of the examples for Installation Art:

The beauty in a piece of art may be subjective, but these installations can safely be labelled pretty loo-py. Turkish artist Sakir Gökçebağ used hundreds of toilet rolls in creating his paper installations displayed at a gallery in Germany. The toilet rolls are sprawled across walls or hung elaborately from plinths to ‘bring beauty to the everyday’ in big, flowing pieces of art.

His Zen Garden is a large three-dimensional drawing in black and white. Lines run the length of the main gallery’s floor – interrupted by sporadic ‘rock’ clusters – and evenly spaced rectangles cover the walls. Songailo’s repetitive patterns have a seductive quality to them and the overall effect is not at all frenetic.

Zen Garden is not typical of Songailo’s brightly coloured public installations, however its duo-tone simplicity stands in nice contrast to the artist’s urban body of work. It also makes the hint of pink glimpsed through the doorway of Fontanelle’s second gallery an even more intriguing gesture.

Dan Steinhilber looks at one of his works, in his 2006 solo show at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. Trained in painting — his wife, the painter Maggie Michael, is one of Washington’s leading abstractionists — his art has often explored that art form’s legacy. Here, he’s used knotted balloons to simulate a classic “action painting” of the 1950s. As the balloons deflate, some of its “action” will fade away, too.

Surrealist Fashion ; Designer’s choice

Surrealism is a movement in art and literature that flourished in the early 20 century. The attempt was to change perceptions of the world by expressing imaginative dreams and visions free from conscious rational control.

Salvador Dali was one of the most influential surrealist artist.

His meeting with Coco Chanel inspired him to design clothing, such as the costumes the theatrical piece, Bacchanale, and for the opera, Tristan Fou.

He designed the “lobster dress” and the Aphrodisiac Jacket (1936). In 1950 he created, with Christian Dior the special Costume for 1945 with drawers.

In 1934-1935, Dalí produced, from a photographic portrait of Mae West, a gouache with the title : Face of Mae West which can be used as a surrealistic apartment.

Also presented here is the Salon au vis à vis de Dalí et Gala, which recreated the master’s projects going back to 1935-1937, such as the Lamp with drawers and the Lamp stand with crutches (produced from sketches made around 1936-1937).

  • A phoenix is a mythological bird which never dies but, after 500 years, is consumed by fire and born again, making it a symbol of the Resurrection, endurance and eternal life. Only one phoenix lives at a time, so it was also used to symbolize Elizabeth’s uniqueness and longevity.
